Oxygen
Save time and money by reducing the amount of laundry by freshening your clothes instead. For garments you wear more than once before you wash, the Oxygen Fabric Freshener removes odours, lessens wrinkles, and dries damp clothing through the combine power of heat, steam, and scent spray.
This addition to your home doesn't sacrifice the beauty of your home but instead adds to it. It's a sleek and modern design that can stand alone as a decorative piece in any home.
Timeline
2 days. This was submitted in 2013 as a third year rapid minor project.
The Problem
Floors, baskets and beds are littered with clothing people don’t have the time or the patience to put away. I myself am one of them. I find difficulty finding a place to put worn clothing that don’t need to be put in the wash after every single use but don’t belong in the dresser or closet filled with clean and pristine clothing.
How do we not eliminate the habit but instead work around it and make it socially acceptable?
Oxygen provides a place to refresh their worn clothing and allows the continuing habit of throwing their clothes somewhere. It does so without creating an awful mess and instead add aesthetics.
Ideation
Inspiration came from fashion, interior design and current tech design trends. Shapes were inspired by nature by being simple, organic and geometric. Colour trends at that time was monochromatic with colour breaks from differences in finish or material. Oxygen followed these trends by mimicking the look of a potted plant. It features a glossy base and matte top for aesthetics and functional purposes as it highlighted the buttons.
Final Design
Clothes only simply need to be caught on one of the many “branches”. Whenever ready, users may lift the hidden mesh underneath to cover to the clothes and begin either steaming, drying or freshening clothes.
Steam or scented spray is released from the valves on the bottom to remove odours, lessen wrinkles, and dry damp clothing.
Once a function is selected LEDs are illuminated to inform users the duration.
A freshening solution can be refilled from the back.
My Final Thoughts
Although I was given a few weeks to complete this project. The initial concept was something I wasn’t happy to submit. I made the decision to completely redo my project 2 days before submission and Oxygen was born. I’ll admit that many functions and features were not fully thought through however I do believe that it’s a viable solution for a common problem.
